Welcome to the
website of the Phoenix Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc. We are a community service
organization with programs that are targeted to serve
the needs of our community.
To the Men of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc. in the “Valley of the
Sun” – I am humbled and
honored to have been elected to lead the Phoenix Alumni
Chapter into the 2nd century of our Fraternity. It was
great to socialize with many of you in Indiana, July
5-10, 2011, as we retraced and celebrated 100 years of
achievement by our Fraternity. Yet we still have plenty
of work to do!
“High school
dropout is a national crisis for Americans in general
and African-Americans in particular. Nationwide, 47
percent of African-American males will graduate high
school compared with 78 percent of White males. During
the past four years more than six million students
between the ages of 16 and 24 dropped out of high
school”. This means that more than half of our
African-American males will NOT graduate from High
School. Sadly, the prison system is being privatized
and entrepreneurs are bidding on contracts to build
prisons to house our African-American
males.
Our Kappa League program is a
community service and mentoring program for the youth
in our communities. Members of the Kappa League program
participate in a wide variety of programs to build
teamwork, to help improve their academic readiness for
college and to develop a love of providing service to
the community.
I commend our Chapter for working
hard to make our Kappa League program one of the
BEST in the country.
Due to the success of our Kappa
League program, we have more youth applying for
membership than we have resources to accommodate.
I encourage every Kappa to contact
our Guide Right Director, Dr. Ahmed Collins, and
volunteer to help him help the youth of our
communities. As our 31st Grand Polemarch Dwayne M.
Murray, Esq. so eloquently states, “Brothers,
when we serve others, we serve Kappa best.” If
you have been sitting on the sidelines, it is time for
you to get back into the game.
To the community at
large –
This year our Fraternity turned 100 years old and we
had our centennial celebration in Indianapolis,
Indiana. As we toured the campus of Indiana University
where our Fraternity was founded in 1911, we were
reminded of the harsh environment our ten Founders had
to endure to earn a college education. They were not
allowed to sit in the classroom and had to look through
a dirty window pane to see, not hear, the lessons being
taught. Yet, they achieved and became doctors,
dentists, attorneys, educators, journalists, and
entrepreneurs. It was amazing to personally see the
fruit of those seeds that were planted 100 years ago in
the tens of thousands of Kappa-Men of different colors
and nationalities that went home to where it all
began.
Community, we need your support for
our Guide Right program as we guide the youth of our
communities pass the pitfalls and frightening
statistics to earning a college education.
Please come back and visit our site
often to see the activities of the Phoenix Alumni
Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Please
contact me or any officer of the chapter if you have
questions or desire additional information.
Warm Regards,
Ray LaStrape
